10 Reasons why I couldn’t sell my iPad…

There are not many times in my parenting/adult life where I have treated myself to a gift.  However, in December 2010 I did.  There was this new-fangled gadget on the market called an iPad, and I just wanted one.  So, with my Christmas bonus from work I cautiously spent the money on my own iPad.  This purchase took quite a bit of convincing from Travel Man to complete. “You deserve it honey” and “You never do anything for yourself”, are the words from my husband that ring in my head.

When the iPad was new, I used it a lot at work and not so much at home. When I walked away from my job last year, and my status changed to Domestic Goddess I thought I would have used it more than I was.  So, the iPad was sitting on my desk collecting some dust, and I had this fleeting thought that maybe I should just sell it.  And then logic and reason set it in, along with some teasing from my family.

After spending a few months debating with myself and really paying attention to the use on my iPad I came up with this list:

10. Evan, my grandson, and I like to play checkers and tic-tac-toe on the iPad.  Where would we play our games on the go?

9.  When someone in the house says, “Google it”, where would we go to become informed?  The iPad is usually sitting right on the coffee table or kitchen counter for anyone to grab and look something up on the web.

8.   The DJ capabilities with iTunes, the iPad and the Remote app are amazing.  How would we play all that fine music at the Party House during family parties?   How would the assigned DJ skip to a new song right in the middle of one that’s already playing?

7. I love to play word games on the iPad.  How could I possibly keep up on all my games of Words with Friends, and Scrabble in a timely manner?

6. Amazon shopping is my favorite form of shopping, along with a Prime membership of course.  How could I check on my Gift Lists?  How would I get my Christmas shopping done?

5.  There is always some movie that I want to watch on Netflix, and I find using the iPad is the best way to dump movies into the  Netflix Instant Que.  How would I search for movies on Netflix, or reserve a movie on Redbox?

4.  The iPad has become a phenomenal tool for cooking.   The ability to view the recipes on-screen while preparing a meal, etc. is awesome.  How would I view all of the Pioneer Woman recipes that my family has grown to love?  Check out this cool iPad holder I got for Christmas from my hubby for using it while I cook.

3. I have learned to use WordPress to write posts to my blog in the last few months.  How would my blog posts get shared with the world at a moment’s notice? I can take it with me wherever I go.

2. I can essentially have a mini computer with me wherever I go.  When I am with Travel man on a mini-vacation I don’t have to wait to use his laptop.  I have my iPad.

1. The number one reason I couldn’t sell my iPad is that it is  the first time in my working career that I used a bonus to buy something just for me.

Thanks to my family members, particularly Travel Man, who have encouraged and teased me through this decision.  I will forever love my iPad.

Christmas Tree Follies – Part 2

There is a part of Christmas that is more enjoyable for me than any other.  I love, love, love putting up the Christmas tree, and getting it all lit up for the first time.  And then we just add ornaments, nothing more.  As a matter of fact most of the ornaments on my tree are the annual ornaments that I bought for each of this kids that are still living at home, from the time they were born.  They really fill the tree quite nicely.

Anyway, remember early in December when I told you all the story of buying my artificial tree. If this is your first time here take a look at this story: Christmas Tree Follies.  I think this is my fourth or fifth Christmas with this tree.  It has been a rock star.  Just take it out the box, assemble correctly (which is a story in and of its self), and plug it in.  There you go.

So the tree should look like this when it is all decorated:

But about 10 days into December my tree looked like this:

I asked Travel Man what we could do to repair it and he said we would have to take the ornaments off and pull it apart so he could check the wiring.  Well that wasn’t happening before Christmas so I just lived with it, and without the lights for about a week.  Then I dug around in the garage and found and extra string of white lights, plugged them in and strung them around the tree.  They weren’t quite the same as the real thing, but they filled in the gap a little bit.

We took down our beloved tree on New Year’s Eve, and Travel Man was able to check the wiring.  Lo and behold it was just a blown fuse.  So he replaced the fuse for me, we tested the lights, and packed it all up for Christmas 2012.    Hopefully, this tree will last us a few more years, or until they come out with an LED version that Travel Man and I can agree that we like!  Did you have a real or artificial tree this year?

Denim oh Beautiful Denim

Denim is a staple in our lives, well in my life for sure.  Just like a great cup of coffee, or crawling out of bed in the morning to find out what the headlines of the day are.  The thought of denim always brings my thoughts around to how prominent denim is in our everyday lives.  Now if you have to wear a uniform to work, or have a specific dress code you appreciate jumping into your denim all the more right after a long day at work.

Remember in the 70’s when you would throw patches on your favorite jeans to keep them alive, and now, well maybe not right now, it’s common to buy your jeans with the holes already in them, so now you pay for the holes??

I had a pair of jeans in high school, and I’m sure they were probably bell bottoms, that got patched and patched and patched, and I knew how to sew, so I just kept patching them.  So comfy.

And I have had a few denim shirt jackets over the years that  could just be worn over anything at all.  Love my denim.

Now I have to ask are you a fan of Levi’s or Wrangler? Remember Levi’s was there first, and I’m sure there are lots of fans of other brands of denim out there these days.

Do you know what a Canadian Tuxedo is?  This is an urban coined phrase for an outfit that includes a denim jacket and jeans, and if you dare a denim shirt under the jacket.  Yippee.

Over the years I’ve made the denim purses where you cut off the top half of the jeans and have instant pockets.  Then there were denim hats, denim and flannel baby blankets.  It’s all been so much fun.  I don’t think I ever had any denim shoes, I’ll have to work on that one.

Denim is one of those timeless pieces of clothing that will never go away styles will change, the size you wear might change (oi!), but you will always own some piece of clothing that is denim.  Denim is like classic rock it will always be an amazing part of your life.

What’s your favorite denim garb?

Sharing this post from my archives, just like the denim described above, it’s timeless.

Fixin’ Things & Cleaning Up

Today was just one of those days when you feel like there’s just one more thing, and then one more to get done.  The domino effect was definitely in order.

You know how it starts.  You buy a new and wonderful sauté pan.

It will fit into your corner cabinet beautifully, once you throw away the old pan that it is replacing.  You venture into the corner cabinet to find the old pan, and voila you start cruising all of the pans and lids to find out if you should get rid of anything else.  Like lids with missing pans or vice-versa.  Then once you have all of the oldies out-of-the-way you go about the job of re-organizing, wiping off all of the shelves, and there it is a clean and tidy cabinet.  Yay!

Then it was on to the unfinished baseboard in the family room.  This has been really nagging at me for a few months.  I don’t always tell Travel Man when little things like this are bugging me because we always have more important issues to discuss and worry about when he is between trips.  But we decided today was the day to finally finish the baseboard.  A little bit of caulking, a coat of paint, and voila the baseboard are finished. Yay!

Such a short amount of time, but so rewarding to get these little things out-of-the-way, and get all the little remodeling details done!  Next we’ll be tackling the trim pieces around the bottom of the kitchen cabinets, and the voila another thing off of the long honey dooooo list.

Recently, at the request of Travel Man, I started making a Reneedoo list  (things to get done while Travel Man is away).  My list usually involves the things that need to get done so when Travel Man is home the dominos fall back on his list.  So far this system has been working.  It’s still in the baby stages, but we’re hoping to graduate to kindergarteners on the “Honey/Renee – Do’s”  very soon.

My next self-inflicted chore it to tackle my pantries.  I have two huge pantries on either side of my fridge.  The pantries are the lower cabinets portions in this picture.  Very handy.

They have slide out shelves, so you can only imagine what can accumulate there in a years’ time.  It will be just as rewarding, I’m sure to get this task off of my cleaning list.  I’ll let you all know how that goes in a few days!  Wish me luck.

Have you had the cleaning/organizing bug in your house lately?

That Old Dining Room Table

At any given moment, on any given day we never know how many kids, friends of kids and assorted family members will be sitting around the dinner table.  You see we have a huge dining room table.  It’s an old oak table that has been handed down through the generations and is well over 100 years old.  It has been through more Thanksgiving’s, Christmas’ and birthdays’ than I can count.  This table has EIGHT, count them, EIGHT leaves.  It opens up big enough to seat 8 adults comfortably, and 10-12 of us elbow to elbow.  And if we have a few late arrivals we can easily squeeze in a couple more.

Our dinner time is precious time.  We have three kids in college, and a married daughter with her husband and our grandson all under one roof!!  So if you’re adding that all up we have 8 people around the table without any extra invites.  This is a special time of day for me as we can all catch up with each other on the days happenings, and  listen to our grandson, who is almost 6, work really hard to try and get a word in edge-wise surrounded by all of these grownups.  The food in this instance is just a bonus.

If the kids have friends dropping by, or if our niece bops over we just squeeze everyone in around the table and get the food and conversation going.  The conversation can go on for long periods of time.  Some days the conversation is so funny or full of love and life that you don’t want dinner to end.  Everyone enjoys each others antics and company, and is always glad to have the time to slow down at the end of the day.

You never realize how wonderful that old dining room table can be until you have everyone you hold dear to your heart seated right around you in one room.
