Christmas Tree Follies – Part 2

There is a part of Christmas that is more enjoyable for me than any other.  I love, love, love putting up the Christmas tree, and getting it all lit up for the first time.  And then we just add ornaments, nothing more.  As a matter of fact most of the ornaments on my tree are the annual ornaments that I bought for each of this kids that are still living at home, from the time they were born.  They really fill the tree quite nicely.

Anyway, remember early in December when I told you all the story of buying my artificial tree. If this is your first time here take a look at this story: Christmas Tree Follies.  I think this is my fourth or fifth Christmas with this tree.  It has been a rock star.  Just take it out the box, assemble correctly (which is a story in and of its self), and plug it in.  There you go.

So the tree should look like this when it is all decorated:

But about 10 days into December my tree looked like this:

I asked Travel Man what we could do to repair it and he said we would have to take the ornaments off and pull it apart so he could check the wiring.  Well that wasn’t happening before Christmas so I just lived with it, and without the lights for about a week.  Then I dug around in the garage and found and extra string of white lights, plugged them in and strung them around the tree.  They weren’t quite the same as the real thing, but they filled in the gap a little bit.

We took down our beloved tree on New Year’s Eve, and Travel Man was able to check the wiring.  Lo and behold it was just a blown fuse.  So he replaced the fuse for me, we tested the lights, and packed it all up for Christmas 2012.    Hopefully, this tree will last us a few more years, or until they come out with an LED version that Travel Man and I can agree that we like!  Did you have a real or artificial tree this year?

Our Christmas Power Outage

Christmas Day has come and gone, already, but I had to share our family story with you from The Day.  The Party House hosted Christmas Day for the entire family.  We are quite a group when all assembled.

This is our family picture from Christmas Day.  It was a balmy 75 outside, doesn’t really put you in the mood to wear your best sweater when you have a house full of people.

Let me introduce you to everyone:

Seated (from l-r): Evan, the grandson; My Parents Joan & Jim (who are also the grandparents, and great-grandparents – they wear a ton of hats!); Tom, my husband(The Travel Man), and our fearless dog, Clyde.

Standing (from l-r): Cassie, Zach’s girlfriend; Zach, #2 son; Mary, #1 niece: Hilary #2 daughter; my brother Jim, and his girlfriend, Elaine; #1 daughter, Naomi and her husband Brad; #1 son, Bryan, me of course, and our #1 nephew Jim.  Whew!  That was a mouthful!

After the picture-taking festivities, we nosh on some appetizers, have a few cookies, and then it’s time for opening presents, Evan was very, very excited.  At the suggestion of our nephew Jim, we opened the gifts by family.  So each family was giving their gifts to everyone and then we got to enjoy seeing all of the present opening.  I’m kind of a stickler with this, even though it takes awhile with such a big group I love seeing everyone opening their presents.  It’s a giving thing.

So we are at the point where we only have one or two rounds of gifts to go, and……the power completely goes out on our street.  What happened next will go down in the family history books under the “Remember When” section.  Everyone who had a cell phone handy brightened up the room with their screens, and some of the kids have a flashlight app, so those came on right away.    I remember hearing my brother asking the kids, “What’s the name of the flashlight app?”.  It felt like you were at a rock concert with the lighters waving in the air (am I dating myself?).  So hilarious, I cannot begin to explain how funny this was, and how funny it looked in our dark living room.

Now, we have a generator in our garage for an occasion like this, and Tom was at the helm getting the generator started, and a few lights on so we could finish opening presents.  The guys were rigging up extensions cords, and trying to figure out how to keep the oven going so the ham could stay warm.  And, of course, just as they were about to pull the stove out from the wall, voila the power comes back on.  All in all I think it was only out for about 10 minutes, and it was definitely and adventurous 10 minutes.

As soon as we could corral everyone back in the living room, we finished opening presents which ended with my  Mom passing out our family calendar.  This is an annual event for our family, and is a wonderful way to put together pictures of the years past happenings.  More on our family calendar in another post.  It deserves its’ own story.

Evan was the paper pick up master for this event.  I could not let this post go by without posting this sweet picture of him.  Such a cutie pie!

Picture credits in this post go out to my nephew, Jim, and Elaine.  Thanks for always keeping the shutters flying at our family events.

So we have marked another year of memories on our calendars. It is always such a treat to corral all of the kids in the family for a nice holiday dinner.  And of course we always miss our long distance relatives who cannot join us.  Thanks to all of you who contributed to our Christmas feast.  I’m thinking next year were just doing appetizers and desserts!!  Did anything wild and crazy happen at your Christmas Day festivities?

The Christmas Countdown – Evan Style

For the few weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Evan was using this counter at our house to count down the days until Christmas.  And what you need to know is he loves numbers, and is very into his mathematics in school.  So the countdown was quite intriguing to him.

He had his own counter at home and for some reason the days left until Christmas at home never quite matched the days left until Christmas at Grandma’s house.  So he and I had a lot of discussions about who had the days right.  Usually it was Grandma of course.

This is such a fun way to count down the days until Christmas.  With my own kids I think we made (or should I say I made) paper chains for them to count down the days all the way through high school.  I still believe in Santa Claus of course.

Anyway, after Christmas was over Evan didn’t really pay any attention to the counter, or so I thought.  When he was staying with me last week he called me into the family room.  “Hey Grandma, come and look at this”, Evan says to me.  So, of course I’m thinking uh-oh what’s he gotten into.

And lo and behold what he had done was changed the number to double zero.  The counter then looked like this:

No days left until Christmas.  He was giggling and laughing because he thought it  was so clever. It was like he played a joke on me.  A fun time at Grandma’s house is always what I’m going for.  Remember the fun times you had at your Grandma’s house?

Evan’s Scavenger Hunt

Grandson Evan is on his winter break for three weeks.  So he has lots of time on his hands to do “stuff”.  I have the good fortune to be able to take care of him on Thursdays and Fridays while he is on his break.  (I just noticed in this picture he was wearing a legos pirate shirt too – How cool.)

My Mom (Evan’s Nana) called me last week before he came over with a fun activity for Evan.  “Why don’t you send him on a scavenger hunt?”, my Mom said. “With your big back yard it would be a great place for a hunt”.  I am always game for new and different activities to do with Evan.  So I made up a list of ten things for Evan to search for, and waited for a moment when he was completely bored before I sprang the hunt on him.

Sometime after lunch and a few errands, Evan said, “I don’t have anything to do Grandma, what can I do now?”.  I said, “How about a scavenger hunt, would you like to do that?”.  Evan says, “What is that?”.  So, I explained it to him, and told him there would be a prize for him if he found all ten things on the list.  He was totally game for it.

So I gave him this list and an empty grocery bag to collect everything in.  Here’s what he was searching for:

He set out with an empty grocery bag to collect the items, and the one that stumped him was the bungee cord.  He had no idea what it was.  I tried to explain that it was like a rope but stretchy with hooks on the ends.  He was not seeing this, so I confess I did help him with this one.  But everything else he found on his own.

Here’s the picture of the goodies he collected. It looks like the leaf blew away before I snapped the picture, but it was there.

His prize was two of those little velvet posters to color.  They were Christmas scenes. When he pulled them out the bag he gave me a big hug and said, “You’re the best grandma ever”.  Just melt my heart.

Then he said, “Now let me make a list for you Grandma!”.  I told him we would do that next week, and he was all for it.  Now we’ll just see if he remembers.

What a fun easy thing to do with him that was different. (Thanks Nana!) Have fun with the six-year olds, and keep giving them adventurous things to do.  Happy hunting everyone.
