Evan’s Little “Vest”

My latest sewing project started out to be a shirt for Evan.  Just a casual shirt, kind of like a Hawaiian shirt.  This is one of my procrastination projects.  You know the variety, you start you stop, you start again.  Well this week I started this project again, and I’m in it to the finish.  I was somewhat motivated by a little voice asking me, “Grandma, when are you going to finish my vest?”.   And I really needed to get on my horse and get it done, because he is getting so tall!!

Of course, it was Evan asking me, and I have been telling him all along this will be a shirt.  But he has had a different vision.  He wants a vest.  So being the good grandma that I am I am altering my project to a vest.  He is quite insistent that he will wear this over t-shirts.  I think in the heat of the summer he will just wear it after swimming.  So in my sewing instructions I skipped over the sleeves and made him a vest.

Here’s a few pictures of my project during construction:

I finished Evan’s “vest” last Thursday night and gave it to him Friday morning before he left for school.   The doggie buttons were a little wonky to button on his own so he needed a little help.   “Grandma, you finished it!!”, Evan exclaims.  I say, “Just for you, Evan.”

After school he came home and took off his t-shirt and just wore his doggie vest.  It was so cute.  For me, one more procrastinated project off of my list, and a happy grandson to boot!!  Who could ask for anything more?  Next project is in the works, cloth napkins for my dining room table.  What’s the latest project you’ve procrastinated on?

Guess who got a hold of my camera?

One day before school last week Evan was bopping around the house taking pictures.  I did not really pay close attention to what he was doing, as I just like to let him go and be creative.  The pictures below are his own doing, and I am amazed at the range of expressions with his self portraits.  His mother has not seen these yet, and I know it will give her a good laugh.

The pictures with the little smiley pictures are sitting on my desk.  The family pictures you are seeing are the pictures that Evan took of my digital picture frame.  I really think he’s a budding photographer.  I may be biased on this point because I’m his Grandma.  But I love his little pictorials.

What a different world Evan is growing up in.  The digital age of pictures is just “normal” for him.  Taking self portraits is “normal” for him.  Being able to view the pictures you have just taken on your computer is “normal” for him.  Oh what a different world Evan is growing up in.  I love letting him be creative, and just doing his own thing.

These pictures just make you smile.  Happy weekend everyone, enjoy the weekend!

My April Fool’s on Evan

If you are a reader of my Evanisms page you will have seen what a little jokester Evan was on this past Sunday, which was April Fool’s Day.  Being the diligent Grandma that I am I decided to have a little April Fool’s fun of my own.

I found a post on one of the Mom blog’s that I follow- Money Saving Mom for a little April Fool’s present.  The print out was to make a package of “donut seeds”.  There was a pdf link to print out the package and then glue it together, and in the package you place your favorite Cheerios, these are the donut seeds!!  I knew this would be a great little April fool’s for Evan once I saw it.

Here’s a picture of the package I gave to Evan.  I waited until we were done eating breakfast to give it to him.  I said, “Evan, I got you something to plant outside.”  Evans says, “Really Grandma what is it?”  I hand him the little “seed” package, and tell him its “seeds” to grow his own donuts.  Everyone else at the breakfast table is talking this up, and excited for Evan.  Evan takes the packet, and reads a little bit of it and then opens it to look at the “seeds”.  Evan says, “Grandma, this is just Cheerios.”  And I smile and pause, and tell Evan, “April Fool’s, I got you!!”

It was a fun way to start the day, especially when Evan got in the spirit of the little jokes all on his own.  Happy April everyone.  Wishing you all a wonderful Spring!

How do we get our home projects (ala DIY) completed?

With Travel Man’s unpredictable schedule at work it is sometimes difficult to get our DIY (do it yourself) projects completed in a timely manner.  Now you may be asking yourselves how do you ever get things done around the house?  There must be a long “honey-do” list for Travel Man!  We try really hard to keep the “honey do’s” to a minimum, but when there’s a project to complete that requires Travel Man’s experience and muscle here’s what we do.

Our latest endeavor is to get our entryway flooring replaced.  Now, the first phase of this project is a story all on its own.  You know how you get a plan together for demolition, begin to execute that plan, and then realize you need a plan B?  Well that’s what happened on this project.

With my Domestic Goddess status in full swing,  I told Travel Man I had plenty of time to try to take out the tile.  The key word here was “try”.  I had a big chisel, hammer, and a multi-function, variable speed tool to begin my project.  I was using the multi-function tool to get the grout out-of-the-way, and then the chisel and hammer to get up and under the tile to get it removed.  Seemed like a fairly simple task.  I can do this, is what I told myself.  Well,  after the demo of the first two tiles, I was done.  This was a project that was going to kick me in the bootie, and I had to ask Travel Man, “What’s plan B?”  I much prefer sticking to the painting and decorating.

Plan B was to purchase a hammer drill, and get under the tile to bust it out of there. There was so much mastic under the tile, it was like the previous tile master in this house used all the mastic he could muster for this project.  So, the demolition for this project now falls in Travel Man’s lap.  Remember I was on jury duty for most of the month of March, so when Travel Man had a few days off he was working on the  tile removal.  This was a very, very labor intensive undertaking.  It also created more dust in the house than I have seen in a long, long time.  Dust here, dust there, dust everywhere!

Here’s a few pics of the project so far, and my dusty hubby from the process!!  It was quite an undertaking, and took about 3 half days of removing the tile and then I volunteered to get all of the old grout/mastic dollops off of the floor.  Now we have a nice smooth concrete pad that we are looking at putting some laminate flooring down on.  That’s our next phase,  flooring purchase and installation.  So once we ( or should I say I) decide on the flooring,  we will wait for a weekend when travel man is home to get it installed.

In the meantime I will be painting the entryway, and hopefully trying out some wall texturing.  More on that project later this month.

If you have a DIY project to complete how do you find the time to work on it from start to finish?  It’s not like the TV shows where rooms are complete in half an hour.  It takes much, much longer…and in our case requires a lot of advanced planning.   Happy DIY-ing everyone!

Are you ready for some baseball?

Hey baseball fans, this is our favorite sports time of year at the Party House.  It’s time for another Angels season to begin.  I cannot wait for opening day this Friday.  Then on the 7th of April, my entire family (almost) is going to a game together.  Yeah!!  We are excited for the 2012 season with the new stars in the Angels lineup.  So, dust off your Angels t-shirts, go buy some peanuts, and get ready to sing, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”.  We’ll be teaching Evan this song this year!!  Looking forward to seeing a lot of games, and hopefully getting to a few games at the stadium.
